Are you reassessing how you position yourself in the current market? Or rethinking how to use AI and optimise your CV to land your next role?

That’s exactly what I’m addressing in this article.

Here’s what I’m hearing in recent conversations with senior leaders and executives: The job market feels tight, competition is fierce — and they’re struggling to stand out when hundreds of candidates are applying for the same role.

One leader told me they spent several hours researching a potential employer and customising their application, only to be rejected the same day.

These individuals are more than qualified. They’re being selective about the positions they’re applying for and taking time to tailor each application — but getting nowhere.

When the market tightens, competition becomes even harder at senior levels. If you’re waiting to be selected or relying solely on job boards right now, it’s time to rethink your approach.

In this article, I’m sharing 6 strategic moves to help you stand out as a senior leader — even in a crowded market. You’ll discover how to move from competing with hundreds of other candidates to positioning yourself strategically.

#1 — REVIEW YOUR CURRENT STRATEGY

Start by assessing your existing job search activities and exactly where you’re spending your time and energy. Actively applying for roles, searching job boards and using recruiters is only one small piece of the pie.

One client I worked with had been actively job hunting for over 6 months. When we met they were frustrated and exhausted after spending significant time on their job search each week. In fact, it’d almost become a full-time job!

We shifted their strategy to a couple of hours a day of targeted action. In less than a month, they had two clear offers on the table — and the confidence to make their next move with intention.

Here’s the lesson for you: Cut down the time you’re spending on job applications. Instead, redirect 70-80% of your efforts into activating your network, having strategic conversations and creating opportunities. When you move from reactively applying to proactively creating conversations, you will take control of your job search.

#2 — TAP INTO THE HIDDEN JOB MARKET

When I worked in recruitment, we used to say less than 30% of roles were ever advertised. This means a large portion are filled via conversations, referrals and internal networks — before they’re publicly posted.

If you’re only responding to advertised positions, you’re competing in the most crowded part of the market. By this stage, a potential employer has already decided what they’re looking for and is assessing multiple candidates against the same criteria. Often, they’re basing this decision on the last person in the job — or someone currently acting in it.

The bottom line is this: Using your network allows you to access opportunities before a formal hiring process begins. And at senior levels, many roles are created with a specific person in mind. When you tap into the hidden job market, you cut out the competition and access the 70% of roles most candidates never see.

#3 — LEVERAGE THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN YOUR NETWORK

When looking at your network, I like to break it down into 3 levels.

First, your warm contacts. These are the people you know directly — close friends or colleagues, past peers or old bosses.

Second, friends of friends — or people your warm contacts can introduce you to. Think of this as your first and second degree connections on LinkedIn.

Third, your cold contacts — brand new people you meet at a networking event or via cold outreach.

The biggest mistake I see people make is starting with cold contacts first. Not only is this more uncomfortable (and often procrastination-inducing!) it rarely gets results.

For example, I met one client who was frustrated after reaching out to over 50 cold LinkedIn connections over 6 months — with no response. We refocused her approach to a few key warm contacts in her immediate network.

Here’s the takeaway for you: Rather than cold outreach, start with people who already know you. Then get an introduction to a trusted connection in their network. Because when you leverage warm connections and trusted introductions, you start seeing results faster.

#4 — BE STRATEGIC ABOUT WHO YOU CONNECT WITH

I recommend splitting this into two categories: people and target companies.

First, create a list of five organisations you’d love to work for and identify at least one contact within each. Start with direct contacts you know working in those companies — even if they’re in a different role or business area.

Have a conversation with them and then ask for an introduction to key decision-makers or someone in your preferred team. Next, look for first-degree contacts who can connect you with people inside those target companies.

Second, consider the people in your network more broadly. Who do you know doing work (or elements of work) which interests you? What about those in roles or industries of interest?

Again, begin with warm contacts or people your direct connections can introduce you to.

LinkedIn is one of the best tools you can use to map your network strategically. Follow your target companies and use the People tab on each company page to find first and second degree connections. You can also search for people via job title, industry or location.

When it comes to connecting, always send a direct message or email to your first-degree connections. With second-degree connections, find a mutual contact and ask them to make an introduction where possible.

The lesson for you is this: Take the time to map the market and align your networking activities to roles and organisations of interest — rather than relying on scattered outreach. When you’re intentional about who you connect with, you will position yourself for the right opportunities.

#5 — MOVE FROM RESEARCH TO REAL CONVERSATIONS

In a recent interview with LinkedIn expert Karen Tisdell, we talked about how to use LinkedIn to find the right people — and take those relationships offline.

LinkedIn is a great research tool, but it’s important to move from analysis into action — and actually talk to people! Karen and I agreed the best way to do this is via informational interviews. This is essentially a conversation with someone about the work they do.

Before contacting someone to set up an informational interview, start with a clear intention. Know the reason you’re reaching out — whether it’s to learn more about their career path, organisation or get their industry insights. Focus on gaining market information or building the relationship — not looking for a job.

When asking for an informational interview, be upfront with your request. Let the person know what you admire about their work or career experience. Ask if they’d be willing to set up a short 15-20 minute conversation (in person or via virtual meeting) to share their insights and advice as you plan this next chapter of your career.

Always be clear you’re not looking for a job — and offer to support them in return. This immediately removes the pressure and makes it more likely they’ll say yes. Also, resist the urge to send them your CV if they offer to circulate it internally.

In the actual conversation, make sure they are doing 80% of the talking. You want to ‘interview’ them about their career history, work experience and how they got to where they are. Go in prepared with questions about their daily responsibilities, what they enjoy or find challenging about their work, progression pathways, and your transferrable skills or gaps.

If the discussion shifts into questions about you or your job search, move the focus back to them. Close the conversation by asking: Who else do you recommend I speak to? Then get them to introduce you.

Here’s the bottom-line: Informational interviews are one of the most powerful ways to build long-term relationships with future mentors, sponsors or hiring managers. Some of my own closest peers, referral partners and supporters started as conversations like this.

These decision-makers will also think of you before they’re hiring — or refer you to someone who is — giving you access to the passive job market. When you focus on building long-term relationships, you’re part of the conversation before roles are even defined.

#6 — OPTIMISE YOUR CV TO COMMUNICATE YOUR VALUE

To close, let’s talk about your positioning on paper.

My first tip is to create one optimised document — or a couple of versions of your CV if you’re targeting different roles. Within this document, identify 3-5 core competencies that make you unique. Under each, list a couple of specific, measurable achievements that demonstrate your impact.

Once you have this master document, the second tip is to customise your resume to each application. Shift the order of your core competencies or add any listed in the job description which aren’t on your standard CV. Spend time here — but cap it at 1-2 hours, not several.

The third tip I have is to limit your use of AI. Senior leaders are spending hours using AI to write their CV or match their experience to each application.

However, the biggest issue I’m seeing with AI is that it produces generic profile statements and long lists of skills or responsibilities which dull down your point of difference. At senior levels, you don’t stand out by sounding the same as everyone else. Instead, highlight your unique value proposition by focusing on the core competencies and specific, measurable achievements that set you apart.

My final tip is to avoid over-formatting. One client used lots of fancy tables, graphics and complex layouts. It looked impressive — but too much formatting causes issues with applicant tracking systems and reduces your chances of success.

Simplify your resume. Use clear headings, bulleted lists and lots of white space to make it easy to read.

Here’s the takeaway: Your CV is a supporting document, not your primary strategy. When you optimise your CV to communicate your unique value, you will stand out as a senior leader.

So there you have it. The 6 strategic moves to help you stand out — even in a crowded market. I hope this helps you stop competing with hundreds of candidates and take back control of your job search.

But before you close the door on 2025, I invite you to reflect on your year, career — and what you want in the next one!

In this week’s bonus article, I’m sharing a simple exercise to help you review your year. Discover 4 powerful questions to reflect on your successes, learnings and prepare for 2026!

QUESTION #1 — WHAT ARE YOU CELEBRATING?

Every January, you set big goals and work hard to achieve them. But how often do you pause to celebrate the milestones along the way? Acknowledging your success is essential for finding fulfillment at work.

Start by asking yourself —

What am I celebrating this year?

Think back to your January goals. What were the highlights — your greatest career wins?

What obstacles did you overcome?

List everything you’re celebrating.

Did you deliver a project on time and budget — or land an important client? Have you started a new job, been promoted or won an award? Are you working flexibly, prioritising your health or building your network?

Did you overcome health issues or family challenges? Were you dealing with burnout or a toxic work environment? Or is your team under-resourced — and you’re celebrating getting through the year?

Finally, highlight the top achievement you’re most proud of in 2025 and why it’s important to you.

QUESTION #2 — WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST LEARNING?

Now, reflect on what you learnt in 2025 and how you’ve grown. Consider the mistakes you made or things which didn’t go as planned.

Remember: Failure isn’t about the outcome — it’s about having the courage to step outside your comfort zone, try something new and grow. Start by listing out your biggest career lessons for 2025.

Is it saying no and setting boundaries, letting go of perfectionism or comparison? Did you learn to delegate to free up more space for strategic thinking? Have you put yourself out there, applied for a new role or pitched for a new client — even if it wasn’t successful?

Start by listing out your key learnings for 2025

Then, identify your most significant lesson. What will you do differently in 2025 to course-correct or avoid similar mistakes?

Write down the ONE change you’ll make and why it matters

QUESTION #3 — WHAT WILL YOU NO LONGER SAY YES TO?

What do you want to let go of in 2026? Consider —

Fears or limiting beliefs holding you back. Fear of failure (or success), imposter syndrome or not being good enough

Things you think you ‘should’ do based on other people’s expectations

Commitments or relationships which no longer serve you

Anything you’re no longer willing to say YES to as we enter a new year

Using the prompts above, make a list of everything you’d like to let go of in 2026.

Then, ask yourself —

What’s the impact on your health, important relationships, happiness or mental wellbeing?

What has it cost you?

Why do you need to let it go now?

Finally, prioritise the key things you’ll no longer say yes to. And make a commitment to yourself to honour those promises.

QUESTION #4 — WHAT’S YOUR INTENTION FOR 2026?

Imagine it’s December 2026, you’re in your ideal career and looking back on the past year. Answer these questions as if it’s already happened:

What goals did you reach in 2026?

What results did you achieve in all areas of your life. Your work, relationships, money, health, personal or professional development?

How did you spend your time?

What was the vision for the life that you wanted to create?

Let your mind wander and write down everything that you’d like to do or achieve in 2026.

Consider: What’s your intention for 2026? From what you’ve written, highlight the ONE thing you want to change or achieve.

Then ask yourself: Why does it matter? Knowing the purpose behind your goal keeps you motivated and on track — even when challenges come up!

Now, declare your goal. Write it down as if you’ve already achieved it, by finishing this sentence:

On 31 December 2026, I will have (list the goal or intention as if it’s happened). This is important to me because (insert why).

Not only does making a note of our goals help us remember them, but studies show writing them down (as if they’ve already happened) makes it more likely we’ll achieve them. This is because our brain seeks out the information we need to reach our goals — and discards the rest!

The Christmas break is the perfect time to reflect on 2025 and what you want next year. This simple year-end reflection will help you review your year and prepare for a strong start in 2026!

I’ve certainly been guilty of it in the past!

But in recent years, I’ve become intentional about reflecting as I go. When I do my quarterly planning, it always starts by looking back and noticing what I’m learning along the way.

And at the end of the year, that pause matters more than ever.

Because the pace of change isn’t slowing down. People are feeling stretched and overloaded as they race towards the end of year finish line. They’re juggling December deadlines, Christmas commitments and all the joys of the silly season!

All of this makes it even harder to step off the hamster wheel and create space to think.

So at the end of each year, I reflect on what I learnt — and what I’ll be taking with me into the next one.

Read on to discover my 4 game-changing lessons (and honest confessions) for 2025. Find out what worked, what didn’t — and how these lessons can support YOUR career!

LESSON #1 — THE POWER OF THE PAUSE

Right now I’m hearing the same thing from my clients: They’re busier than ever and feel like they never switch off. I’ve experienced it myself — the constant noise, distractions and filling every spare moment with activity. When I found myself reaching for my phone while watching TV, I knew something needed to shift.

Because wearing ‘busyness’ like a badge of honour reduces productivity and your ability to think strategically. So this year, I’ve been intentional about creating space in my schedule for deep thinking and taking time to pause.

And even though I work out every day, I also wanted to get more incidental movement into my days. So on my non-running days, I’ve made it a priority to get outside for an afternoon walk. Sometimes for 10 minutes, other times it’s a full 3-5km loop.

At least once or twice a week I’ll grab a coffee and head to my local park for an hour. This isn’t about self-care or being out in nature — though it’s part of it. I’m carving out space for strategic thinking.

The key thing is I’m not listening to a podcast or scrolling social media, I’m reflecting. Often, I’ll record a voice note on my phone because I’m a verbal processor and that’s how I get my best insights. By creating more than I’m consuming, I’ve sharpened my thinking and generated more ideas than ever!

Here’s what I’ve noticed after implementing these moments of pause over the past year…

First, doing it consistently has made me more creative. It’s allowed me to process and find clarity on different ideas: new offers, business strategies or how to approach certain client situations. If I’m planning a workshop, it helps me pull all the pieces together: the key messages for that organisation, the challenges their people are facing and how what I’m sharing supports them.

Second, it’s strengthened my thought leadership. I’m regularly reflecting on the key themes coming up in client coaching sessions, questions people are asking and what I’m noticing in the world of work. I then use these insights to create podcast episodes, LinkedIn posts and content which addresses the specific issues my audience is facing.

One client recently said, “I enjoy your weekly emails. Where do you come up with all those content ideas?” And THIS is the secret.

In the past, I’ve felt creatively blocked or not known what to talk about. But I haven’t been challenged for ideas this year — and giving myself space to think has made ALL the difference!

Third, it’s helped me disconnect and reset. People are mentally overloaded and their days are filled with endless to-do lists. And I think the solution is the power of the pause.

From a career perspective, if you don’t stop to reflect or proactively plan, you end up reacting to external expectations — your workload, boss, organisation or the market. This is the value of the space I create in one-off Strategy Sessions and long-term coaching programs. It gives you time for deep thinking, brainstorming ideas and clarifying next steps.

Consider — Where in your week could you pause and create space for strategic thinking? And how would that impact your career?

LESSON #2 — EXPERIMENT WITHOUT EXPECTATION

At a Christmas event last week, I was chatting to a senior executive who’d transitioned from corporate into their own consultancy in the past year. He asked a juicy question which took me a moment to answer: ‘What was the biggest lesson from your first few years of business?’

My response? ‘Don’t be afraid to experiment — ESPECIALLY in the beginning!’

And this advice is applicable at every stage of your career or business. In fact, it was a major highlight for me in 2025. And it’s a core part of the method I use to help clients find clarity on their career direction.

This year, I’ve continued to build out my signature key-notes into short, half and full day workshops, testing and refining those offerings. In addition, I’ve also tried out new corporate offers: multiple sessions for clients, running a coaching cohort off the back of an event and contributing to larger learning & development programs.

This has allowed me to work deeper with each client, deliver better outcomes and build long-term relationships beyond one-off engagements.

During our conversation, the consultant also spoke about the importance of non-attachment, which really landed with me.

Because letting go of control and staying detached from the outcome was a big lesson for me this year too. Putting things out there and seeing what works — without making it mean anything about my value if something doesn’t land as planned.

And this is a critical career lesson for YOU. So many people stay stuck in their current situation because they think they need certainty to move forward. They want to identify their ideal role, the perfect career path or make the ‘right’ decision before taking action.

But clarity comes from action, not analysis. When you’re willing to experiment and detach from the outcome, you will clarify your direction faster.

Consider — Where are you waiting for certainty in your career instead of taking action? And what’s one small step you could take to start testing instead of overthinking your next move?

LESSON #3 — KNOW YOUR CURRENT CAPACITY

Closely tied to the theme of experimenting, 2025 has been all about understanding my limits, exploring how I like to work and what I have the capacity to hold.

My word of the year was LIMITLESS. I wanted to build plenty of time and spaciousness in my days to connect, create and serve my clients. And experience limitless energy, impact and growth in my business.

While I was already confident in the way I structure and deliver my 1:1 and corporate offerings, this year has stretched me. The corporate projects I mentioned earlier have challenged my assumptions about how much work I have capacity to take on. But it’s also helped me get honest about what energises or drains me — and the way I want to work moving forward.

At the start of the year, I’d intended to do more one-on-one coaching. In reality, I’ve worked with half the number of private clients I’d planned. This decision was intentional, as I prioritised other corporate projects.

What I’m taking away is that I want to do LESS high-level 1:1 coaching — but with a small number of the right clients. The people I love supporting who are engaged, do the work and take responsibility for their results.

While I’ve always had strong boundaries, I now have zero tolerance for those who make excuses, play the victim or disrespect my time. Sometimes my ideal clients are experiencing burnout, mindset challenges or are navigating toxic work environments and that’s OK. The difference is they take ownership and actually change their situation.

By understanding my capacity and working intentionally, I’ve created the limitless time, energy and impact I set out to.

Not only have I doubled my financial results, I’m having a greater impact — through the growth of the podcast and depth of work I’m doing with organisations and individuals. But more than anything, I have more space, ease and enjoyment in how I work.

Here’s why this matters to your career: Most high-achievers keep pushing through without ever stopping to assess their capacity. But when you know your capacity and work within it, you will create a career that’s fulfilling AND sustainable.

Consider — What tasks, habits or commitments are currently draining your time or energy? And what’s one change you can make to work more sustainably in 2026?

LESSON #4 — OWN YOUR VALUE AND BACK YOURSELF

At the top of this article, I mentioned a recent conversation about advice for someone starting out in business. One of the points we discussed was the importance of understanding your unique value proposition, being targeted in how you position yourself and intentional about who you work with.

I reflected on how the transition from corporate into my first business was simpler because I had an existing client base, was well known and operating in the same market. However, when I launched my current company, I was effectively starting again in a brand new market.

In hindsight, I completely underestimated how long it would take to clearly differentiate myself and fully own my unique value. This was a constant challenge for my first few years in this business — but it hasn’t come up for some time.

Yet in 2025, this lesson feels different. I’ve stepped into a new level of embodied self-belief around the unique value I have to offer.

This isn’t about arrogance or ego. I know my value — and I’m being recognised and paid well for it. I’ve received consistent feedback from clients and the market which reinforces this.

And while self-belief is one piece, it’s more than believing in my worth and value.

This year has required a deeper level of self-trust — to fully back myself and trust what’s right for me, rather than outsourcing or questioning my decisions. Taking responsibility for my results has led to huge growth in my business, impact and reach.

Looking ahead, next year is about consolidation — going deeper, not wider — with a small number of quality clients. I plan to develop group programs for both 1:1 and corporate clients, which will allow me to scale while supporting people at an even deeper level.

Here’s the lesson for you and your career. When you back yourself, you will increase your visibility, influence and impact.

Consider — Where are you looking outside yourself for answers or questioning your decisions? And what’s one way you can start backing yourself in your career?

So, there you have it. The 4 biggest lessons I’ve learnt during another incredible year. My hope is you can learn from my experiences and celebrate your year too.

It’s something I see all the time with the high-achievers I coach and I’ve been guilty of it too.

So today, I’m doing exactly what I encourage my clients to do: pausing to celebrate a BIG milestone…

Because we’ve officially reached 50 EPISODES of The Career By Design Podcast!!

When I first launched the show back in November 2023, I made the intentional decision to go all in with this project and record 50 episodes, consistently.

So to be here, 50 episodes later, feels like a major milestone. Especially considering 90% of new podcasters quit after three episodes. And of the remaining 10%, 90% of those don’t make it past 20 episodes.

I knew I didn’t want to be a statistic. My goal was to commit to 50 episodes, see how I like it and then decide if I would continue. Turns out, I LOVE it!

By keeping that commitment to myself, I built confidence and self-belief over time.

In this article, I’m inviting you behind the scenes to celebrate this incredible milestone with me! I’ll share the biggest lessons I’ve learnt from recording this podcast over the past two years and how they can help you take ownership of your career with clarity, confidence and the right strategy.

#1 — IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET STARTED

Starting a podcast was on my priority list for YEARS. Every January it would reappear, but something always got in the way…

In July 2023, I attended a networking event with other women in business. We shared our intentions for the new financial year and I declared that launching a podcast would be my one key project for the next six months.

Fast forward to the end of October and I realised I still hadn’t started. So I bit the bullet — and launched within two weeks!

Here’s what this taught me: It’s NEVER too late to start.

I’d been talking about this idea since 2018. Yet with two months left in the year, I went all in and turned this project around within a fortnight. I thought it would take me forever to figure out all the tech — but it was easier than I’d imagined.

Here’s the takeaway for you:

What big goal or important project do YOU keep putting off? The one you’re telling yourself is going to be too much work — or that you don’t have time for?

This is exactly what keeps you at a crossroads in your career, waiting for the ‘perfect’ time instead of getting started. Whatever it is, just start!

When you take responsibility and commit, you’ll be amazed at how much progress you can make — and quickly.

#2 — TRUST YOURSELF

When I first shared my plans to launch this podcast, one well-intentioned friend suggested that unless you had a big audience, it would be a lot of work for very little reward. Now while I respect this person, they didn’t have a podcast. So while I took the feedback on board, I ultimately trusted what was right for ME.

I’m also someone who’s competitive with myself and, truth be told, a little rebellious. I don’t like rules. So if someone tells me I can’t do something, my typical response is: ‘I’ll find a way to prove them wrong!’

The lesson? I trusted myself. And I had a very clear intention around WHY I was doing this project.

First, it was never about becoming some big influencer, growing a following or monetising a podcast. My goal was to share my thought leadership, create a resource library for clients and add value to my network.

Yes, it’s also a platform where I can share my offers and how I help people. Ideally, this may lead to new clients — but making money wasn’t the driving force.

Second, I wanted to build trust and nurture the relationships I have with my audience. A podcast is much more personal than reading an article. You can hear my voice, feel my energy and get a sense of my personality, mentoring and teaching style.

This helps potential clients decide if I’m the right fit. And if they have a need I can solve, it gives them a low-pressure way to connect.

Starting this podcast was a lot of work at first. However, over time I created systems to streamline the process. Now, it’s quicker than writing an article from scratch or trying to work out what to post on social media a few times a week. It still takes work, but the process feels easeful — and that’s exactly what makes it sustainable!

When it comes to results, it’s definitely led to new clients. I’ve had corporate clients book keynotes, workshops or coaching programs — and many have said they listened to several episodes before even making an enquiry. It’s been an incredible way to warm up my audience and build connection from the moment they find me online.

Also, sometimes the reward is the joy you get from the process. And that’s exactly how I approached this project from day one: as the creative outlet I’d been missing.

The bottom line is, I didn’t doubt myself. I backed myself and leant into self-trust.

I was warned it would be hard work for little reward. Two years later, I completely disagree.

Here’s what this means for you:

It’s easy to take advice from mentors or peers you respect — but always run it through your own filter first.

Are you making this career decision based on what’s right for you — or what you think you should do? Trust yourself over external opinions, especially when others can’t see your vision

And what’s your intention? Get clear on the ‘why’ behind what you want before setting goals, making a decision or starting any new project

These are the exact questions I ask my clients to help them shift from second-guessing to self-trust. Because when you trust yourself, you will make clearer choices and move forward with confidence!

#3 — OWN YOUR STRENGTHS

In business, you need a way for potential clients to find you. Social media is a fantastic tool to do this — and for me, that platform is LinkedIn, where my audience is.

BUT it takes a lot of time and energy to create daily posts or videos. And while I like writing — and I’m a good writer — the perfectionist in me means it takes ages to craft the right words and structure.

Yet speaking? That’s different.

As I shared in the very first episode of the podcast, I talk A LOT. I could talk under water — and I’m always the last to leave the dinner table because I can’t stop talking!

Communication is one of my greatest strengths. Whether it’s coaching, speaking or teaching, using my voice is such a natural way for me to operate.

In fact, when I first started a blog for my business, I realised the best ideas came when I spoke them out loud. I’d record insights after a client session or go for a walk and voice note some thoughts — just like I did to create this podcast episode. Then, I’d take the transcript and turn it into an article.

This is how I still create content today. I’ve found a way of marketing which suits my unique strengths and personality. And when something energises you, you’re more likely to stick with it — and this is where long term success is built!

Here’s the lesson for you:

Honour your strengths in your work as much as possible, rather than trying to ‘fix’ your weaknesses. I help my clients uncover their unique strengths and double down on the skills which energise them. Then you can delegate or outsource the rest and let others shine in the areas that drain you.

When you lead with your strengths, success feels effortless and sustainable.

#4 — BUILD TRUST

The Edelman Trust Barometer shows that trust in governments, media, companies — even leaders — is at an all-time low. And in a low-trust economy, it takes a longer time to earn someone’s confidence than ever before.

It’s well known that we need to see a message multiple times before we decide to buy. Previously, that number was around 7. Now it takes more like 27 touchpoints and around 7 hours of consumed content — before someone is ready to take action.

This level of connection is impossible to achieve in a 30 second video or single social post. Especially when people are overwhelmed, distracted and endlessly scrolling online. This is why the podcast has been a powerful platform for me to build trust with my audience in a more personal and consistent way.

Listeners often tune in during their commute, on a run, or while doing the dishes. Over time, I become part of their daily life. And because there’s less distraction than on social media, I’m able to hold their attention for longer and create real connection.

Many private coaching clients and corporate contacts have told me they’d listened in prior to reaching out. They found me online, listened to several episodes and liked what I was sharing. This built incredible trust before our first conversation.

Here’s the takeaway for you:

Whether you’re a senior leader, executive or business owner, building a personal brand is essential. I help high-achievers define and communicate their value proposition, so they’re seen as the go-to person in their field. A big part of this is sharing your thought leadership and expertise to grow your network, attract new clients and career opportunities.

When you build trust, you will magnetise the right opportunities to you.

#5 — CONSISTENCY COMPOUNDS

I’ve spoken a lot about the power of consistency and here’s a real example. If I’d only looked at the download numbers of a single episode in the early days, it may have been disheartening. But 2 years in, those early episodes have gained traction — and that reach will only continue to grow over time.

I still don’t have millions of downloads each month — but I never set out to be an influencer. I care about impact, not internet fame!

In the very first episode I ever recorded, I said this: ‘Even if one person listens and takes the tiniest tip, strategy or new perspective which helps them make the smallest shift in their career, to me, it’s worth it.’

This is still true. I’ve created an authority platform where people can find me and learn from me. What started as a creative outlet has become one of my best tools to attract aligned clients.

And because I publish consistently, people keep coming back — and this builds trust over time.

So the real win here is consistency. I’ve shown up for 2 years straight — and the results are compounding!

Here’s the lesson for you:

Are you taking consistent action towards your career goals — even when progress feels slow? And what’s ONE small step you will take this week to move closer to where you want to be? Put it on your calendar now and commit to it!

Because when you take consistent action towards your goals, consistency compounds over time.

So there you have it. The five biggest lessons I’ve learnt from recording 50 episodes of the podcast. My hope is they help YOU create a career on your terms!

I remember walking into my boss’s office, palms sweating and heart racing.

It was early in my career and my first real negotiation discussion. I was about to ask for the pay-rise I believed I deserved based on my performance and financial results.

Despite this, I became tongue-tied and ended up accepting terms I wasn’t happy with. Less than what I knew I was worth (and one of my male colleagues had negotiated).

It doesn’t matter how confident you are in front of clients or speaking about your area of expertise. I worked in sales and negotiated with large corporations every day. A lot of my clients are lawyers and negotiate for a living.

But when it comes to our careers and ‘selling ourselves’, many people struggle.

Whether you want to negotiate a pay-rise, promotion or new job offer, you must know your value and how to communicate it with confidence.

Over the past 17 years, I’ve helped hundreds of leaders secure salary increases and learn to effectively negotiate. And with annual performance review season upon us, I’m pulling back the curtain on my biggest insider secrets.

Read on to discover how to confidently negotiate your worth. Follow these six simple tips to get exactly what you want!

SECRET #1 — KNOW WHAT YOU’RE WORKING TOWARDS

How does your employer measure success? What are the performance expectations? Are there specific metrics or targets you’re expected to meet?

It sounds simple, yet so many leaders I work with lack clarity on this. They assume it’s about hitting certain financial or performance targets — but a lot of people haven’t ever asked! Which means they could be correct — or completely off track.

Don’t leave this to chance!

Because if you don’t know what you’re working towards, how do you know you’re meeting expectations? And if you’re not reaching all required criteria, you’ll struggle to negotiate what you want.

The same applies if you’re starting a new role — make sure you’re clear on performance expectations upfront.

When you know what success looks like, you’ll negotiate with confidence.

SECRET #2 — GET FEEDBACK NOW

Many individuals base their performance on vague or indirect feedback. I often hear: ‘I think they’re happy with me.’ Or: ‘My boss was grateful for the work I did on this project.’

To be in a strong negotiating position, you must know exactly how you’re tracking against performance objectives. Knowing this information also allows you to bridge any gaps ahead of a negotiation discussion.

Get specific, meaningful feedback NOW. Because when you stop guessing and start asking, you will take control of your next negotiation.

SECRET #3 — RECOGNISE YOUR WORTH

Effective negotiation is about putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. You need to be able to answer: Why do you deserve this pay-rise, promotion or new opportunity?

Start by doing your research. Understand what others in similar roles and at your level of experience are earning — and use this data to back-up what you’re asking for. Salary surveys, job adverts, recruiters, external colleagues and mentors are all good sources.

Collecting evidence of your success is also critical. Gather specific examples of your results including personal fees generated or clients introduced. Also consider demonstrated leadership experience or costs saved (for your organisation or clients).

If you believe you’re bringing in 70% of your own workload — what evidence do you have of this? Always use metrics, data and exact examples to support what you’re saying.

When you recognise your value and back it up with data, others will too!

SECRET #4 — CLARIFY WHAT YOU WANT

Before any career negotiation, start by getting clear on your ultimate goal. What is the ideal outcome you want? Then, identify your bottom line — or the minimum you’re willing to accept.

Also, write down the different outcomes you’re after. This gives you room to negotiate and increases your chances of getting what you want.

Let’s say your goal is a $30K pay-rise and your walk-away point is $10K. In this case, a $15K or 20K increase may be outcomes you’re happy with.

In this article, I share tips on how to answer questions about salary expectations at interview. If you’d like more guidance on the best way to ask for the salary you want AND how to back it up with data, check it out next!

And while I’ve focused on salary here, don’t forget to consider other non-monetary benefits that are important to you. Whether it’s the flexibility to do school pick-ups, work a four-day week, or access professional development like certifications or coaching — be sure to ask for them!

When you know what you want, you’re more likely to get it.

SECRET #5 — SEEK TO UNDERSTAND

It’s normal to feel nervous about negotiation discussions. But remember, a negotiation is a two-way conversation. Ask open-ended questions to better understand your manager’s position and priorities.

If they decline or push back on your salary increase request, get curious. You could ask: How did you calculate this? This opens up the discussion and reveals if there’s room to negotiate further.

Ask about the opportunities for progression. Is there potential for a raise or promotion down the line? How much and when?

Take a long-term view, especially if this is your first conversation. You may agree to a review in 3–6 months based on performance — especially if gaps have been identified.

When you treat negotiation as a two-way conversation, you’re more likely to achieve the outcome you want.

SECRET #6 — NEVER ACCEPT THE FIRST OFFER

Don’t accept the first offer — no matter how good it seems! Ask thoughtful questions to keep the conversation open. Stay focused on what you want and the range of outcomes you’re comfortable with.

It’s easy to lose confidence in a negotiation and settle for less than what you want — especially under pressure. If needed, request a follow-up discussion in 24-48 hours. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask for time to consider any offer.

This way, you can reset and return to the conversation from a clear, confident position. When you give yourself space to pause, you’ll stay in control of the conversation.

These strategies have helped my clients increase their income, confidence and negotiate successfully. I hope these tips support you too!

If procrastination is sabotaging your success, you’re not alone. And that’s exactly what we’re addressing today.

You could be delaying an important project, putting off a career move — or avoiding something which deep down, you really want to do.

But dreams often get put on hold because you’re scared of failing.

Procrastination is a challenge my coaching clients continuously contend with. They’re ambitious, high-performers, yet still find themselves stuck in analysis paralysis. They know exactly what they need to do — but lack the motivation to start.

And I get it. Even with ‘focus’ and ‘activator’ as two of my top strengths, I still have moments where I get distracted, experience resistance or struggle to take action.

However, there are some simple ways to work through it.

Read on to discover the REAL reason we procrastinate — and 4 practical strategies I use to overcome it and move into action.

WHAT IS PROCRASTINATION?

When you procrastinate, you needlessly keep putting off the things that are important to you and you want to do.

The distinction here is choice. I’m not talking about those things you think you ‘should’ do or that someone else expects of you.

This is about the tasks which move the needle, the career move you’ve been thinking about and your big goals. When you procrastinate, you delay taking action towards your long-term vision.

WHY DO YOU PROCRASTINATE?

It’s not because you’re lazy, disorganised, or bad at managing your time — even though that’s what you might believe.

Procrastination usually comes from something deeper — fear. Fear of failure, worrying about what others think or not feeling good enough. Trying to do things perfectly or ‘be’ perfect.

Your brain is wired for survival and designed to keep you safe. So if there’s a chance you might fail, be judged, or feel exposed in some way, your brain steps in to protect you.

Procrastination becomes a way to avoid this discomfort — by delaying the task that’s triggering it.

We justify our behaviour by telling ourselves we’ll do it later. When we feel better, more disciplined or motivated…

You convince yourself you’ll feel more ready tomorrow, on Monday or next month. Then the time comes, only for you to delay it again. And as you keep pushing the task aside, it becomes more and more unattainable.

Then, you beat yourself up and feel guilty for not doing it. Or you try to push through the resistance — only to burn yourself out in the process.

HOW DO YOU GET UNSTUCK?

The key to overcoming procrastination is to recognise the fear — and take action anyway. But this isn’t always easy.

Here are 4 practical tips that have helped me — and supported many clients to move through resistance and back into momentum.

#1 — MANAGE YOUR MIND

To feel motivated and get unstuck, you must become aware of the fear holding you back and learn to manage or overcome it.

First, start with awareness. Ask yourself: What’s the fear that’s holding me back? Whatever it is, write it down. For example, you could keep putting off building your network because you’re worried about what others will think.

Second, learn how to manage or reframe it. Begin by allowing yourself to sit with the fear. This is about finding the balance between acknowledging the fear — without letting it control you.

Another way is to reframe the fear or belief by replacing it with a healthier, more positive thought. Shift your focus to your values, your ‘why’ and what’s driving you. How does overcoming this fear or completing the task honour what really matters to you?

If you took action — what would you be saying YES to? You may value connection with others, want to make an impact through your work or advance your career.

And what would you be saying NO to? Staying isolated, playing small or coasting in your career? Think about the greater impact on your vision, goals and entire life.

When you learn to manage your mind, you will move forward with clarity and confidence.

#2 — SIMPLIFY

Starting your day with 30 items on your to-do list creates instant overwhelm. Especially when you’re looking at your big vision or ‘end goal’ — and everything it takes to get there.

The antidote to overwhelm? Simplify.

What’s the one immediate goal you can focus on to reach your big vision? And what’s one small step you can take right now to get closer to that goal?

Instead of waiting until she could block out days in her schedule to complete a big project, one of my clients committed to one hour a week — and chipped away at it, step by step.

Set simple action steps. Plan ahead and schedule important tasks. Make it easy for yourself to stay motivated and in action.

Finally, instead of waiting until you complete a goal before celebrating and acknowledging your success, learn to enjoy the process. By finding the positive in each task and having fun doing it, you’re going to be much more motivated to take action.

Even the most tedious or challenging task has value. Consider — what are you learning? How is it helping you become the person you want to be?

Is it about becoming more disciplined, building a new habit — or letting go of all-or-nothing thinking?

When you focus on small, intentional steps, you will reduce overwhelm and stay in action.

#3 — BE KIND TO YOURSELF

If you’re stuck in procrastination, one of the best things you can do is to practice self-compassion. Dr Kristin Neff, a leading expert on self-compassion, puts it beautifully:

“With self-compassion, we give ourselves the same kindness and care we’d give a good friend.”

Neff’s research reveals three key aspects of self-compassion. First, it’s about being kind to yourself when you fail, don’t feel good enough or procrastinate, rather than being critical or judgemental. Beating yourself up only leads to guilt and demotivation — which keeps you stuck in the cycle of inaction.

Second, it’s recognising you’re not alone. Everyone struggles with motivation and procrastination at some stage — it’s part of being human!

Third, it’s about taking a balanced approach to the challenges you’re experiencing. This means not pushing your emotions aside — but also not getting swept up in them. It’s important to be aware of your fears and acknowledge negative feelings without becoming consumed by them.

When you practice self-compassion, you’ll see that progress is possible — even when motivation feels low.

#4 — DO YOUR BEST

Motivation is the energy behind your actions. Your energy naturally shifts depending on your physical, mental and emotional state.

Most people can push through tedious or challenging tasks when they’re driven by a bigger goal. But motivation levels change day to day — and when you’re stuck in procrastination, getting started can feel especially hard.

To manage this, a philosophy I’ve adopted is to simply focus on always doing my best.

This concept comes from Don Miguel Ruiz’s book The Four Agreements. The idea is to realise your ‘best’ might not always be 100%. It could be 70% one day, 50% the next.

By focusing on doing your best, you reduce the pressure to be perfect and stop beating yourself up when you don’t get everything done.

What’s helped me is doing a quick check-in each morning. Ask yourself: What do I have to give today? Is it 50%, 70% or 90%?

This simple practice allows you to set realistic, achievable goals. When you honour your energy and do your best, you will move through procrastination — and make steady progress toward your goals.

Procrastination can quietly erode your confidence, drain your motivation and hold you back from the goals that matter most. These strategies have helped my clients and I get unstuck and move into action. I hope they support you too!

February marks the REAL start of the year for many leaders, making it the perfect time to explore the key career and leadership trends defining 2025.

Because here’s the thing: The pace of change isn’t slowing down. We’re experiencing major global shifts — economically, politically and socially — which are reshaping the workplace in real time.

So, let me ask you: Are you ready for what’s coming?

In my recent conversations with senior leaders and executives, one challenge keeps surfacing…

Many have been so focused on leading their teams and delivering results that they haven’t had time to think about their own career direction. One leader shared they’ve spent YEARS in reactive mode — without intentionally planning where they want to go next. Now, they’re at a point where they know it’s time for a change, but they’re unsure what that looks like.

Another executive put it perfectly when they said, “I’ve spent years setting career goals and developing plans for my team, but I’ve never actually done it for myself.”

And this is something I see all the time. As an ambitious leader, it’s easy to focus on external priorities — like leading your team or driving business outcomes — while putting your own career on autopilot. But with so much change happening, taking ownership of your career and leadership development is more critical than ever.

Read on to learn the top 4 career and leadership trends for 2025 — and how YOU can stay ahead. Whether you’re an individual looking to future-proof your career or leader in an organisation wanting to build a high-performing team, I’ve got actionable insights to help you navigate these shifts!

TREND #1 — THE GROWING AI ADOPTION

Change isn’t coming — it’s already here and happening faster than ever. Companies are rapidly adopting AI and automation to boost efficiency and reduce costs. But here’s the even bigger challenge: the skills needed for success today look very different from even 5 years ago.

Our education and workforce systems were built for the industrial age. These outdated structures are crumbling and no longer serve the digital era. By the time my 7-year-old nephew enters the workforce, the jobs available will be unrecognisable, making many of the skills kids are learning today obsolete.

Outside of tech, LinkedIn’s latest Top Jobs on the Rise list includes roles in hospitality, customer service, and travel. So even though my husband recently had his dumplings delivered by a robot (true story!), demand for in-person, human-centric roles remains strong! While digital literacy is important, the greater need is for the critical human skills AI can’t yet replicate — like emotional intelligence, creativity and complex problem-solving.

For individual leaders, long-term career success depends on adaptability. Those who continuously learn, upskill and reskill will thrive. Ask yourself: What do I need to stay relevant in 2025?

With technology reshaping jobs at a rapid pace, companies must prioritise succession planning and talent mapping over short-term hiring. Rather than just filling jobs now, it’s about identifying high-potential employees and developing them for future leadership.

As a leader, start career development conversations NOW and create internal career pathways — before your high-performers walk out the door.

When you embrace change and leverage human skills, you will remain competitive and lead a future-ready team in the age of AI!

TREND #2 — FROM RECRUITMENT TO RETENTION

With unemployment rates at historic lows (around 4% in Australia as of December), competition for top talent remains fierce. One growing trend I’ve noticed — and have advocated for YEARS — is the shift in focus from recruitment to retention.

Instead of constantly searching for external candidates, the smartest organisations are focusing on developing and retaining their top performers.

For individual leaders, this means your employer may support you in upskilling, redesigning your role — or even exploring new career pathways internally.

Many leaders I work with feel stuck in their current position and assume there’s no room for growth. So, they start looking externally — without ever discussing their aspirations with their employer! If you’re considering your next career move, don’t overlook opportunities within your existing organisation.

From an organisational perspective, companies that fail to prioritise career development, mentorship and internal mobility risk losing their best people.

Teams are already stretched thin from the rapid pace of change in recent years. Staff shortages have left them under-resourced, leading to increased workloads. Losing top talent not only impacts performance — it increases the risk of further attrition.

As a leader, regular career development conversations with your team are essential to prevent unnecessary turnover. And when it comes to your career, don’t forget to take charge of your own development too.

Ask yourself: What are the gaps between where I am now — and where I want to go next? Identify ways to close them, schedule a conversation with your manager and create a development plan together.

When you drive your own development and invest in your people, you will future-proof your career and team!

TREND #3 — BALANCING REMOTE & IN PERSON WORK

The remote work debate is back in the spotlight with Trump ordering all government employees to return to the office. While the impact on corporate America remains to be seen, in Australia, the conversation is shifting.

Flexibility is no longer a ‘nice to have’ — it’s an expectation. The era of Elon Musk-style demands for long, intense hours is over and new employment laws are reinforcing the right to flexible work. The discussion has moved from whether flexible work is possible to how to balance flexibility with in-person collaboration.

As AI automates more tasks, human connection is becoming even more crucial — especially in roles which rely on in person relationships with clients and key stakeholders. Remote work also reduces opportunities for on the job learning, feedback and building your network — which can limit career progression.

For individual leaders, taking ownership of your career development and personal brand is vital. If you work remotely more often, be intentional about networking, strengthening relationships with senior leaders and securing high-visibility projects.

From a company standpoint, employees expect more choice about how, when and from where they work. Generic office mandates — such as requiring staff in the office 2 days a week or on set days — don’t suit everyone. Some value the social aspect of the office or want to avoid distractions at home, while others prefer working remotely more often.

Organisations that lean too heavily on rigid return to office policies office will struggle to retain talent. Instead, a trust-based approach — where employees have autonomy over their schedules while being encouraged to engage in-person — will be far more effective.

As a leader, consider the nature of your work, client needs and business model. But where possible, move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to giving your team more autonomy, while still fostering meaningful connection.

Because when you strike the right balance between flexibility and connection, you accelerate your career and build a more engaged, high-performing team.

TREND #4 — BECOME A KEY PERSON OF INFLUENCE

Your personal brand will be as important as your resume in 2025. In a recent The Diary of a CEO podcast episode, guest Daniel Priestly discussed the concept of being a key person of influence — and I LOVED it!

As he shared, we’re seeing a major shift from corporate-driven brands to individual leaders being recognised for their expertise and thought leadership. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, executive or emerging leader, your reputation and visibility will be critical to attracting new opportunities.

Gone are the days when climbing the career ladder depended solely on internal promotions. Today, both internal and external opportunities come to those who are visible. Whether it’s through LinkedIn, speaking engagements or industry events, positioning yourself as a trusted expert is pivotal to career growth.

As an individual leader, start sharing your insights, lessons and expertise — online, in internal committees or at company events. Not sure where to begin? Engage with content in your field before creating your own.

For organisations, employees with strong personal brands bring credibility and visibility to their companies. Forward-thinking employers embrace thought leadership rather than fearing it as a retention risk. As a leader, support your team in becoming industry voices — it enhances engagement, boost company credibility and strengthens talent attraction.

When you become a key person of influence, you will unlock new career opportunities, elevate your team and enhance your organisation’s credibility.

So there you have it. The top 4 career and leadership trends shaping 2025. No matter where you are in your career, these insights will help you stay ahead, lead with confidence and seize new opportunities this year!

You started the year with big goals, a solid plan and plenty of motivation. But as January comes to a close, you’re struggling to follow through.

With school holidays stretching until February and a long weekend approaching in Australia, this time of year can feel disruptive. Finding consistency in your work schedule or getting anything done feels nearly impossible.

I get it. Even as someone who thrives on structure and planning, I’ve felt this tension. After a crazy December and diving straight into a full calendar of meetings my first week back, I knew I had to get on top of my schedule — quick smart!

Here’s the good news: As you return from holidays and ease back into a normal routine, NOW is the perfect time to reset and get back on track.

Read on to discover 7 simple steps to design an effective work schedule that sticks. You’ll learn my fail-proof system to help you achieve more, in less time!

STEP #1 — SCHEDULE YOUR ‘BIG ROCKS’ FIRST

To create a schedule you’ll actually stick to — and achieve more — start by scheduling your ‘big rocks’ first. This idea comes from Stephen Covey, author of ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ and it’s one of my favourite productivity concepts.

Here’s how it works: Imagine filling an empty jar with large rocks until they reach the top. Then, you add smaller pebbles and sand to fill the gaps between the rocks. The jar is now completely full!

But what happens when you reverse this process? If you fill the jar with pebbles and sand first, there’s no room left for your ‘big rocks’!

In this analogy, the big rocks represent your most important goals and priorities in work and life. The pebbles and sand symbolise the less important tasks — the ones which often consume your time if you’re not intentional.

By identifying your ‘big rocks’ and scheduling them first, you’ll ensure all the important things get done. The smaller, secondary tasks will naturally fit around these — and still get completed! On the other hand, if you let the unimportant tasks dominate your schedule, you’ll struggle to make time for your biggest priorities.

So how do you put this into action?

1. Start with your PERSONAL commitments. These are your non-negotiables, like a weekly fitness class, meeting a friend for lunch, school pick-ups or not working weekends. Block this time out in your calendar before scheduling anything else.

2. Then, schedule your WORK priorities. Dedicate time to your most important projects and goals. Don’t forget to plan your holidays in advance too!

Because when you schedule your ‘big rocks’ first, you will achieve more of what matters most.

STEP #2 — IDENTIFY THE HOURS YOU WANT TO WORK

To create an effective work routine and achieve more in less time, you need to put boundaries around your work hours. Start by identifying the hours you want to work. Then, put them on your calendar.

As a senior leader, this step can feel challenging. With back to back meetings, competing priorities and the constant demands of leading a team, it’s easy for your workday to spill over into your personal time.

This is why setting boundaries is essential. Consider how you can adapt your schedule to reflect YOUR personal and professional priorities. Whether it’s protecting time for deep, strategic work, scheduling regular one-on-ones with your team or leaving the office in time for dinner with your family, being intentional with your hours is key.

But no matter how much control you have over your schedule, sticking to these boundaries isn’t always easy! Here’s the solution: Commit to regular start and finish times and put a hard stop on overtime.

When you identify the hours you WANT to work, you will take back control of your time.

STEP #3 — LIST OUT YOUR WORK TASKS

To design an effective daily schedule, you need to know exactly where your time is going! List everything you do on a daily, weekly or monthly basis to perform your role, lead your team and deliver results.

Struggling with this task? Here’s an exercise to help:

Over the course of one week, keep an inventory of how you spend your time. Review your calendar and note down everything you do throughout each workday. By the end of the week, you’ll have a clear picture of your work tasks and how your time is allocated.

This practice is also a powerful way to assess whether your time is being spent on high-value activities. You’ll quickly see if your focus is aligned with strategic priorities — or if it’s being consumed by low-level tasks that could be delegated.

When you know WHAT you’re working on, you can plan your schedule with clarity and confidence!

STEP #4 — DESIGN YOUR WEEKLY SCHEDULE

At this stage, it’s time to create a weekly work schedule by blocking out your work commitments and allocating time for each task.

Start by categorising your tasks. If you’re a leader, this could include:

Strategic planning or business development

Team meetings or one-on-ones

Client or stakeholder engagement

Reporting and admin

Next, design your work schedule. Think about batching similar tasks, how you like to work and when you’re at your best throughout the day:

Are you most focused early in the morning? Block out time for high priority projects or deep work and leave routine tasks until later

Not a morning person (yes, guilty!)? Book your key meetings from mid-morning when you know you perform your best. It took many years of trying to keep up with the early-birds before I finally started skipping the 7am meetings!

Once your schedule is mapped out, take a step back and check:

Does everything fit? Be realistic about what you can achieve within the hours you’ve committed to work. If you’re trying to fit too much in, reprioritise or adjust.

Lastly, finalise your work schedule. And a note to my perfectionists — at this stage, it doesn’t need to be perfect! You’ll have plenty of time to test and tweak later.

When you design your weekly schedule with intention, you will work more efficiently and stay focused on your priorities.

STEP #5 — SCHEDULE IT!

Now you’ve created your work schedule, block out the time in your calendar. Before you panic, don’t worry. This isn’t about allocating tasks to every single minute of your day!

Instead, we use the concept of time blocking. This means dividing your day into blocks of time (usually 1-2 hours or more) to focus on one specific task or group of tasks.

“If you don’t schedule it, it’s not real” — Marie Forleo

If you’re a natural planner who loves structure, this step will feel easy. But what if you’re more spontaneous and prefer to keep your options open? Even 3-4 hour time blocks could feel too rigid!

If this sounds like you, here are some suggestions to create a schedule with plenty of space and flexibility:

First, time block — but leave space for thinking, creativity and unplanned activities

Second, allow yourself extra time to complete tasks

Third, give yourself lots of breathing room between tasks to reset

Finally, schedule free time outside work hours for exercise, self-care and (unplanned) fun!

Because when you block out your schedule, you will stay focused AND make room for flexibility!

STEP #6 — COMMIT TO YOUR SCHEDULE

Once you’ve created your work schedule and blocked out time on your calendar, the next step is to commit to it! Challenge yourself to stick with this routine for at least a month before making changes, quitting or deciding it’s not working.

Your schedule is designed to be flexible. If something comes up and you can’t get to your Monday afternoon tasks, simply move that time block to later in the week.

Stick with it until it becomes second nature. I guarantee you’ll be more productive, achieve your important goals — and actually have time to enjoy life!

When you commit to your schedule, you will get more done and feel in control of your day.

STEP #7 — REVIEW

After committing to your new work schedule for 30 days, you’ll have plenty of data to assess what is and isn’t working. The final step is to tweak anything that isn’t working and keep everything that is!

Need more time to complete certain tasks? Build it into your schedule

Finding your schedule too restrictive? Consider breaking your day into two halves rather than hourly increments and test it out again for another month

Struggling to get your important projects completed? Dedicate your first 3 hours of the day to this work. Try it for the next 30 days and see how it goes

When you regularly review your schedule, you will create a system you’ll stick to long term.

So there you have it. The exact, step-by-step framework which has supported my clients and I to design an effective work schedule and achieve more, in less time. I hope it helps you too!

Do you know what you’re working towards in 2025?

If not, you’re not alone. Many high performers I work with feel stuck, unsure of what they truly want and overwhelmed about where to start.

So today, we’re talking about how to clarify YOUR vision for the year ahead!

As a child, I remember sitting on the living room floor with my sister, surrounded by stacks of my mum’s glossy magazines. Scissors in hand, we’d cut and paste (the old-fashioned way!) our favourite images onto paper. Without realising it, we were creating our own version of the modern day ‘vision board’.

Now, I’m very practical and strategic when it comes to goal-setting. For a long time, I dismissed the whole concept of vision-boards as fluff and frankly, a bit ‘woo-woo’. But as a certified coach, I’ve learnt how powerful it is to create a clear vision — albeit in my own structured, logical way!

Yet so many of us dive into goal-setting without considering the big picture.

This is like trying to plan a journey without a final destination point. Because if you don’t know WHAT you’re working towards, it’s impossible to figure out the right strategy to get there.

Read on to learn 5 practical tips to help clarify your 2025 vision, set aligned goals and take action with confidence!

Why is having a vision so important?

A clear vision is the foundation for success. It helps you define what you want, stay focused on what matters and take intentional action toward your goals. Your vision also supports you to push past challenges, stay motivated and create a fulfilling career on YOUR terms.

So, let’s dive into the five practical steps for clarifying your vision.

#1 — REVIEW THE PAST YEAR

As a high-performer, I know you’re always looking forward to the next big goal. But before planning ahead, it’s important to take stock of what is and isn’t working in your current career.

Why? Because this ensures you’re focused on what you really want — not what you think you ‘should’ do. Reflection helps you approach the year ahead with focus and intention.

Start by asking yourself:

What worked in 2024?

And what habits, tasks or activities moved the needle in your work and life?

One of my biggest lessons last year was about doubling down on key actions. Despite some health challenges and a packed schedule, staying consistent with my podcast, quarterly masterclasses and daily practices like movement and meditation kept me on track. These commitments supported my mindset, built my self-belief and delivered real results.

What will you KEEP doing this year? Identify the actions that made the biggest impact — and focus on doing more of them, consistently.

Next, consider:

What didn’t work last year?

And what will you STOP doing in 2025?

For me, it was falling into old habits of overwork and realising where I was overdelivering with clients. This year, I’m going to stop working long hours and start being more intentional with my time and energy.

What habits or tasks will you leave behind in 2025 — and what new actions will you START to implement?

Reflect on what you can tweak — or eliminate altogether

Take this time to decide what you’ll keep doing, stop doing and start doing in 2025. If you need guidance, read this article for a simple process to help you review your year effectively.

Because when you know what you’ll continue to do consistently — and differently — in 2025, your vision becomes clear!

#2 — ALIGN YOUR VISION WITH WHAT MATTERS MOST

Having a clear vision and setting your goals from there is key if you want more satisfaction and success in your personal and professional life. This is why it’s crucial to align your vision with your purpose and values.

Your purpose is the ‘why’ behind your work and the impact you want to have in the world. Forget the things you believe you ‘should’, ‘have-to’ or ‘must’ do. These are defined by deadlines — or the expectations of others.

One of my favourite questions to ask clients is:

What does success look like to YOU?

What drives you?

And what’s your ‘why’?

Your values are the things which are most important to you. Empty goals like the pursuit of power or money create unfulfillment. So start with what matters to you most — and build your vision and goals around this.

Say you want to be promoted this year. What about this is important to you? Is it about the title — or is it the sense of security, recognition or achievement you’re really seeking?

When you know your purpose and values, you’ll create a vision which reflects what matters most!

#3 — BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

The best way to clarify your vision is to picture the career — and life — you want to create in 12 months’ time.

Imagine yourself waking up one year from today. Now grab a pen and paper and answer the following questions as if what you want has already happened:

What does your ideal life look like? As you look back on the past year, what have you achieved — personally, professionally, financially, in your relationships and health?

Who have you become? What personal qualities, habits, beliefs and behaviours have you developed?

How do you feel? What emotions come up as you picture bringing this vision to life?

Visualise your ideal day in detail — from the moment you wake up to the second your head hits the pillow. This is about big picture, blue sky thinking. Allow yourself to really dream and journal or free write your ideal scenario.

When you begin with the end in mind, you will uncover the goals and actions needed to bring this vision to life!

#4 — SET YOUR INTENTION

Have you noticed people sharing their ‘word of the year’ on social media lately? While you don’t need to announce yours, it’s a practice I use and recommend to clients.

Instead of big New Year’s resolutions you never keep, the idea is to select one theme word which describes your vision, goals and intention for the year. Here’s how it works:

A client reflected that they were being driven by the needs of others and what they thought they ‘should’ do in 2024. This year, they want to have greater autonomy, feel in control and focus on the things they ‘want’ to do. ‘Liberated’ is the word which describes the essence of what they want to create in 2025.

One year I chose the word ‘imperfection’. Reflecting on this the following New Year’s Eve, I realised — that year was all about getting messy, trying things out and taking imperfect action. It gave me a clear focus for the year, which guided my decisions and actions.

What’s your intention this year?

And what’s the ONE personal word which sums up your 2025 vision?

When you start with a clear intention, your vision becomes a reality.

#5 — CLARIFY YOUR GOALS & ACTIONS

Once you’re clear on your 2025 vision, reverse engineer it into goals and action steps.

Start by identifying your big overarching goals to bring your vision to life. What are those key milestones?

Then, map out the specific actions you need to take to achieve those goals. What are the exact steps — and in what order — to accomplish each goal?

Finally, review your vision on a regular basis as you refine your goals and craft your quarterly plan throughout 2025.

Because when you start by creating your vision, you will know what goals matter most, what steps to take and how to make the right decisions.

Remember, having a clear vision is the foundation for creating success and fulfillment in your career — and life. These tips have helped my clients and I get crystal clear on our vision. I hope they support you too!

Take a moment to pause, check in and consider — How are you feeling at the end of December?

Are you excited for a well-earned break, or running on empty?

Wherever you are right now, I hope you get to celebrate, rest and enjoy the holidays.

But before you close the chapter on 2024, I invite you to reflect on your year, career — and what you want in the next one!

Because while January feels like a fresh start, it’s easy to let your to-do list take over. Many high-achieving leaders I work with share the same story: Life gets busy. Goals lose focus.

This is why I think it’s unrealistic to rely on ONE moment in the year to reset everything. Instead, I believe in having a clear vision, setting meaningful goals and creating a step-by-step plan to reach them — ANY time of year.

In this article, I’m sharing a simple exercise to help you review your year. Discover 4 questions to reflect on your successes, learnings and prepare for 2025!

Finally, highlight the top achievement you’re most proud of in 2024 and why it’s important to you.

QUESTION #2 — WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST LEARNING?

Now, reflect on what you learnt in 2024 and how you’ve grown. Consider the mistakes you made or things which didn’t go as planned.

Remember: Failure isn’t about the outcome — it’s about having the courage to step outside your comfort zone, try something new and grow. Start by listing out your biggest career lessons for 2024.

Is it saying no and setting boundaries, letting go of perfectionism or comparison? Did you learn to delegate to free up more space for strategic thinking? Have you put yourself out there, applied for a new role or pitched for a new client — even if it wasn’t successful?

Start by listing out your key learnings for 2024

Then, identify your most significant lesson. What will you do differently in 2025 to course-correct or avoid similar mistakes?

Write down the ONE change you’ll make and why it matters

QUESTION #3 — WHAT WILL YOU NO LONGER SAY YES TO?

What do you want to let go of in 2025?

Using the prompts above, make a list of everything you’d like to let go of in 2025.

Then, ask yourself —

What’s the impact on your health, important relationships, happiness or mental wellbeing?

What has it cost you?

Why do you need to let it go now?

Finally, prioritise the key things you’ll no longer say yes to. And make a commitment to yourself to honour those promises.

QUESTION #4 — WHAT’S YOUR INTENTION FOR 2025?

Imagine it’s December 2025, you’re in your ideal career and looking back on the past year. Answer these questions as if it’s already happened:

What goals did you reach in 2025?

What results did you achieve in all areas of your life. Your work, relationships, money, health, personal or professional development?

How did you spend your time?

What was the vision for the life that you wanted to create?

Let your mind wander and write down everything that you’d like to do or achieve in 2025.

Consider: What’s your intention for 2025? From what you’ve written, highlight the ONE thing you want to change or achieve.

Then ask yourself: Why does it matter? Knowing the purpose behind your goal keeps you motivated and on track — even when challenges come up!

Now, declare your goal. Write it down as if you’ve already achieved it, by finishing this sentence:

On 31 December 2025, I will have (list the goal or intention as if it’s happened). This is important to me because (insert why).

Not only does making a note of our goals help us remember them, but studies show writing them down (as if they’ve already happened) makes it more likely we’ll achieve them. This is because our brain seeks out the information we need to reach our goals — and discards the rest!

The Christmas break is the perfect time to reflect on 2024 and what you want next year. This simple year-end reflection will help you review your year, get back in alignment and ready for a strong start in 2025!
